The 3 things I keep top-of-mind during multi-million dollar acquisitions
1. Buyer beware
Whenever you're buying a business, expect that not everything is as great as it looks...
From a logical standpoint, why would anyone sell a business if it's doing great?
Usually, the business owners have some skeletons in the closet, even if it's just some minor debt.
They won't tell you upfront... So keep that in mind. You will have to hunt for that information.
2. Set yourself up to pay with installments
Usually this happens by borrowing money from someone or somewhere to make the acquisition, and then paying that loan back.
Having a payment plan tends to be wiser than paying the full amount upfront.
First of all, you never know exactly what you're getting when you buy a business...
So, if your purchase turns out to be a Trojan horse, it can be easier to cancel if you haven't paid everything up front.
The second reason why this is wise is because you can use the profits from the business to pay for the business itself.
3. Use seller financing
So let's say you're buying a business for $100,000 and you pay $20,000 upfront...
Seller financing means that you will pay the remaining $80,000 to the seller over time... without having to take out a loan.
You can use this strategy to buy businesses investing $0 upfront.
You can even have the business pay for itself completely by paying the seller exclusively with the profits from the business.
This is the tip of the iceberg...
